Children's Work

We will be adding children’s work to this page throughout the year.

The Fale Opening

I had a fantastic day on Friday.  I am so proud that the fale is finally finished.  The people that built the fale did a good job because they took a long time to finish it.  The whole school did the sasa and the hymn.  Some people in the cultural groups were dancing. The groups were Kapa Haka, Tongan, Niuean and Samoan.  Jaden in my class performed for the Niuean group.  He was the leader of the Niuean group.  We were so proud of Jaden because he did a fantastic performance.  Before that there were several guests watching the performance.  The fale was decorated with green coconut leaves and white lilies.  Inside the fale up on the roof were beautiful coconut strips.

Our school and the visitors had a feast.  I ate a piece of banana cake, a red sausage and a sausage roll.  My favourite part of the ceremony was when the fale was finally opened by one of the oldest girls in the school and one of the youngest girls in the school and Mrs. Tregoweth.  I felt so fantastic and I will never forget that day because that was one of my favourite days ever.

Zen Garden

When you walk through the awesome brightly coloured archway you will see a beautiful sight, this is our fabulous Zen Garden.

In the top left hand corner of the Zen Garden there is a tall, grey ornament that represents fire. In the opposite corner there are hot red flowers, these represent fire too. On the sand you will see some patterns, watch out because if you step on them the pattern will be ruined. The patterns look like the waves at the beach.

We hope people will come and enjoy our peaceful Zen Garden.

The Beautiful Zen Garden

Stunning bright red flowers represent red flaming fire, this is the most colourful part of our new Zen Garden. These flowers are very attractive and hot like fire. Best of all they smell nice, they look like roses.

The Zen Garden is a reflective, quiet and peaceful place to relax. In the garden there are some things that represent the Earth like bumpy rocks that are mountains and bamboo that is forest.

There is an ornament that looks like metal, it is in the top left corner, it also represents fire. Spongy green moss represents the Earth, it is around a group of rugged rocks. In the garden there is also glorious, soft, shiny sand that is quite smooth. People can make waves in the sand that look like water.

At the entrance to the Zen Garden there is a brilliant archway, hanging inside there is a soft chime bell that the wind can blow.

The Zen Garden is a peaceful place to relax. I like the garden because it is a beautiful, amazing place to look at.

London

I would love to go to London to visit the Queen and play tiggy with the Queen.  I would stay there for a week.  I would visit the princess, king and the prince too.  I would see all the castles and all the bushes and trees.

I would take my family with me because they would want to see the Queen too.  I would travel there on an Air New Zealand plane, it might be a long plane trip.  After my holidays I would go back to New Zealand.

I wish this holiday would come true.

Honey Bees

A honey bee is an insect because it has six legs.  Honey bees are not mammals because babies don’t just come out, they lay eggs.  The queen bee doesn’t work, she stays in the nest to lay eggs, but the worker bees work.  There are all sorts of honey bees.  There are three kinds of honey bees.  One is a queen bee, a drone bee and a worker bee.  Only the worker bees can sting people and then they will die.  The worker bees collect nectar and they dance to tell other bees where the most nectar is.  When the worker bees come out they work straight away.  They have a hairy body and they make their hive out of wax.  Honey bees are good because they help the plants to grow and they make honey that we use for all sorts of things.

Today we went to the hall.  The visitors sang for us.  The visitors came from America to sing for us.  There were six children and they sang three songs.  I liked their voices they were good.  I liked the show very much.

Tornadoes

Sirens blaring.

Roofs ripping off houses like birds, trapped in a giant washing machine.

Cars tumbling over in a tsunami of wind and rubble.

Children crying.

Winds howling like an angry wolf, hunting its prey and ready to strike without warning.

People panicking.

Trees uprooting from the very ground they stand in.

Homes ripping off their foundations.

Fire trucks arriving on the scene as the wolf-like wind dies out.

Then there is silence.

An eerie, dark, silence.

Devastating Expectations

Without a warning, vacuum sucker begins to howl.

Tiny debris forms a pool of dust.  Mighty winds begin to tug on buildings.  Terrifying screams turn to chaos.  Deep freezing shivers jump from place to place.

Thumping feet run for their lives.  Pounding hearts struggle to survive.

Dark twirly skies form a different world.

The times of happiness disappear as nightmares appear.

Screeching with strength, the sound hovered over the land.

Something never expected, is a risk you must take.

The moment of horror.

It is the tornado, which happened in Albany.

Tornadoes

A mighty universe of air whooshing and howling all around you.

The deadly storm that has caused it has died out, leaving behind a killer tornado.

A swarm of newly created debris being hurled at you by a giant.

The tornado is devouring the building and its very foundation piece by piece, like a jaguar feasting on its prey.

Then the tornado suddenly dies out, leaving behind a trail of destruction and a graveyard of dead bodies and buildings.

My Reading Superhero

My reading superhero is Mr Waller because he reads with passion and courage. Mr Waller has enough fuel so he can read. When Mr Waller reads it’s like he is actually the character and not himself, he is a good, active and positive reader. He acts out whatever he is reading, he discusses important things about the book and things that start to form together in the book Holes. Mr Waller reads with a loud and clear voice every time and every day when he is reading to us, he reads very softly and very loudly. He reads kindly and angrily! Mr Waller reads fast and slow, Mr Waller reads weakly and strongly. He asks questions while he is reading the book Holes. That’s why Mr Waller is my reading superhero.

We are proud to announce that Mr Waller was one of twenty teachers recognised for being a Reading Superhero in 2011 – he received a book voucher as part of the nationwide NZ Book Month promotion.  Well done Mr Waller!

Sky Tower High!

Chitter, chatter as the children flooded out of the classroom door.  What will happen?, the class wonders.

Finally, everyone half shouts.  It was about to start.  Whoosh!  The coke shot up high, like some kids expected.  My mum, Kirsten, did another one with three holes drilled in the top.  She dropped in the mentos and it whooshed up higher than the first.  Whoooosh!  Kirsten tried three more, all different kinds of coke.  They all seemed different in the way they shot up.  Diet coke worked the best.  Whooooosh!  That one was nearly as high as the Sky Tower!  When Room 7 tried salt – whoosh!  The experiment was heart stopping!

Those bubbles that form on the mentos mixed with the gases sure creates a BLAST.  After that everyone buzzed with excitement.  I can tell you, it sure was noisy and I can’t wait for the next experiment.

Last night I had a dream about a rainbow butterfly.  It had orange, yellow, blue and red wings.  It was a fun dream for me, I loved that dream.  I will never forget that dream.

I had fun with that dream because the butterfly said, “do you want to come with me?”

I said,”‘yes”.

The butterfly said, “come on.”

I want to play cricket for India.

I will get lots of money playing cricket.  I will travel the world and play on famous parks that great cricket players before me have played on.

I will try to score as many runs as I can so the Indian captain will be proud of me.

Fireworks exploded overhead and even though the shoreline was two kilometres away, I could hear the shouts and cheers from where I was on our fishing boat.  They were happy, but on our boat the new year seemed to loom ahead like a monster rising from the deep.

The wind increased and I could no longer hear the hiss of the white hot embers from the fireworks hitting the water.  A huge black cloud was about to swallow the moon …
