Owairaka District School is a TravelWise School. We work with children, families, the council and the Police to:
- encourage children and parents to walk to school
- reduce traffic chaos at the school gate
- promote walking school buses
- improve road safety
Great Reasons To Walk To School With Your Children
Walking to school is an excellent way to include daily physical activity into your child’s life. And if you walk with them, it’s an excellent way to get some physical activity for yourself too!
Here are 10 great reasons to walk to school together:
- It’s fun
- It’s healthy
- It’s non-polluting
- It’s friendly
- It reduces stress
- It’s a chance to teach and learn road safety skills
- It’s considerate
- It’s educational
- It’s free – no petrol money!
- It makes the street outside our school safer
Being TravelWise And Staying Safe
There are lots of things we can do to be TravelWise and keep our children safe. Here are some ideas:
- walk to school as much as possible
- if you need to drive, park away from the school and walk the last little bit together
- join a walking school bus
- always cross at the crossing
- park safely – no stopping on the yellow lines!
- always be a good role model for others
If you are interested in joining or starting a Walking School Bus please leave your contact details at the school office or email Susan Whysall (our deputy principal) at swhysall@owairaka.school.nz.
