Owairaka School is a WasteWise School. This means that we work really hard to use resources carefully and minimise waste.
Room 20 Takes Action
Room 20 have formed the waste busters club. It is our goal to minimise the waste our school sends to the landfill every day. We have learnt why all New Zealanders need to do what they can to cut down the waste sent to our landfills.
Every year we do a waste audit in our school. We collect up and weigh all the rubbish and recycling our school disposes of in one day. Here are the results…
Our goals are:
- Reduce our waste going to landfills by getting all classes to recycle paper and plastic and by diverting all food scraps to either the worm farm or the bokashi bin.
- Cut down the money the school spends on waste disposal. At the moment we spend $4000 having the orange bin emptied every week.
