I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT, AND TOGETHER WE CAN ACHIEVE OUR GOALS
Owairaka District School has a strong commitment to high standards. This commitment is evident in everyday school life where staff and children are expected to model and encourage the You Can Do It foundations of Getting Along, Organisation, Persistence and Confidence.
The You Can Do It foundations provide a structured way in which to teach, model and reinforce the school’s behaviour expectations:
- I am responsible for my behaviour.
- I treat others with respect.
- I behave safely and sensibly.
- I treat property and the environment with respect.
Along with the You Can Do It foundations, the Values and Key Competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum are very important. At our school there is a particular emphasis on respect, integrity, managing self and relating to others.
We actively work to identify and praise positive behaviour. This is done in several ways:
- Verbal Praise - praising the children for meeting and exceeding expectations
- Sunshine Cards – where children are sent to the deputy principal or principal for praise
- Golden Tickets - recognising positive and helpful behaviour in the playground
- Green Tickets - acknowledging children who are actively caring for our environment
- Merit Certificates – awarded in assembly by our Principal for excellent work or behaviour.
